Local residents play their part

STANTHORPE residents are showing just how dedicated they are to the community, with the ‘Let’s Dance Band’ raising more than $5000 for the Granite Belt Drought Assist.

One of two band members, Frank Mavgeri, said it was the least he and his band partner, Fortunato Isgro, could do to support the community.

Both Mr Mavgeri and Mr Isgro organised the ‘Afternoon-tea Dance’ at the Gatton Shire Hall on October 13, with all proceeds going to Granite Belt Drought Assist.

Mr Mavgeri said he understood what people were going through and wanted to help out where he could.

“I live in Stanthorpe, was born and bred here,” he said.

“I have been on the farm, during the time when my parents were on the farm, so I know what people are going through.

“I just want to help the community out and give them hope, and let them know that people are thinking of them and supporting them.”

Mr Mavgeri said the donation of $5800 would go towards food vouchers and school supplies for those in need.

“We are very happy with the overall outcome.

“The money made from entry fees, multi draw raffles and the auction was all donated to the Granite Belt Drought Assist.”

Granite Belt Drought Assist president Glenda Riley said donations like these were a big help to the community.

“Donations can makes a huge difference,” she said.

Mr Mavgeri said the idea was to keep the money in the community.

“You can support the local community by buying the food vouchers in Stanthorpe and the people in need are getting something out of it as well,” Mr Mavgeri said.

Without the support of the ‘Let’s Dance Band’, Mr Mavgeri said none of this would have been possible.

“I would like to thank all of the people who supported us and attended the ‘Afternoon-tea Dance’.”

You can show your support to the Let’s Dance Band on New Year’s Eve.

They will perform at Stanthorpe RSL from 6.30pm.
