Local athlete wins national championships

Athletics: Stanthorpe's Angus Davey has put the town on the javelin map, winning Australian titles for the 2017/2018 domestic track and field season.

The 16-year-old Toowoomba Grammar Year 11 student won the 2018 Queensland Club 16-Year Boys Javelin Title with a throw of 60.53m, resulting

in selection for the Australian Junior Championships in Sydney held in March.

At this event, Davey won the 17 years boys' javelin title, throwing 12 metres ahead of second place.

The throws were so impressive, they would have also won Davey the national title in the 18 years division as well.

Davey said he was shocked at the great result.

"I couldn't believe it,” he said.

"It was great to throw so well, but a little disappoint- ing at the same time because if I was competing in the 18 Years Division then I would have made it to the Youth Olympics.”

Angus will now be aiming to qualify later this year

for the 2019 Youth

Olympics.

His coach, Ireland Lee, said she was confident he would make it.

"Angus just has a natural ability,” Lee said.

"He doesn't look like a typical thrower, he's small, but he has a natural strength and talent and great technique.”

This was Angus's second national title.

He also won the javelin at the Australian All Schools Track and Field Championships in Adelaide in December 2017.

His ability was first recognised at the 2016 GPS Championships, when he won the 14 years javelin with a throw of 47.03m.

It is a sport he 'stumbled' into.

"I really like track and field events and just gave javelin a go three years ago, and discovered I was quite good at it,” Davey said.

"I just love watching the javelin fly through the air and waiting to see how far it goes, it's a real thrill.”

With the taste of success, he was motivated and prioritised three training sessions a week with Lee, while juggling academics, rugby and co-curricular pursuits.

His determination paid off, ultimately leading Angus to an incredibly successful 2017/18 domestic track and field season and he has his eyes set on Australian representation in the years to come.
