Kevin Hogan hits back at live export protesters

UPDATE 12.30pm: PAGE MP Kevin Hogan has labelled claims by the Australian Meat Industry Employees Union as deceptive and politically motivated.

"No local jobs will be lost due to the resumption of the live cattle export trade," Mr Hogan said.

"When live export was banned these cattle could not be sold overseas and depressed the cattle market for years hurting our local farmers.

"The live export market is specific to Northern Australia out of Darwin. The beef cattle market locally is not geared to live exports.

"The live export market, therefore, does not impact on local meatworks jobs.

"Joel Fitzgibbon, Labor's Shadow Minister for Agriculture, at a forum in Casino recently stated he supports live exports. Therefore the Australasian Meat Industry Employees union need to call on Labor to stop supporting live export as well.

"The live export market is concentrated in the Northern area of Australia.

"It is impossible to muster cattle in the Northern part of Australia during the wet season. These cattle are breed specifically for live export."

FRIDAY 6.50am: TODAY local workers from the electorate of Page will march from Oakes Oval in Lismore in support of local jobs as they claim MP Kevin Hogan continues to deny live exports impact Page's meat processing industry.

Grant Courtney, from the Australasian Meat Industry Employees Union, said ongoing support of the live export trade continues to jeopardise local workers.

"We've tried to engage Mr Hogan on various occasions to advise him of the impact live export has on local jobs, but our requests are falling on deaf ears," said Mr. Courtney.

"In just over a week, voters will cast their votes, and we know that local workers, their families and the broader community want to see a local representative that will stand up for the interests of the local community.

"There are more than 1,000 meatworkers in the local meat processing facilities, every single one of their jobs are at risk if they continue to be ignored, and if we can't secure ongoing supply to local abattoirs.

"There is a clear ongoing tension between live export and local meat processing jobs - and Mr Hogan is on the side that sends supply to be processed overseas, costing locals their jobs.

"Despite live export only making up a small percentage of Australia's meat exports, it is cannibalising our local meat industry. Even after repeated warnings of this problem, Mr Hogan continues to publicly release misleading statements that flatly deny the impact on local jobs.

"Today's rally is a clear message to Mr Hogan that local voters put local jobs first, and that they will not vote for a representative that continues to contribute nothing to the community they are bound to represent."
