WITHOUT even knowing it, you could have a mini-Masterchef in your own home.
The school holidays provide the perfect opportunity to let your children loose in the kitchen - under supervision of course - to see what they come up with.
Gladstone community nutritionist Nicole Starkey says getting your kids into the kitchen is a fun and effective way to teach them about healthy eating.
"You can get them to help plan the menu, shop for the ingredients, read the food labels and get them to help with the food preparation," she said.
When choosing the menu or recipe they were going to cook, you should make sure you factor in their age and attention span, she said.
"When they are quite young they might lose interest and wander off for a bit and then come back," Ms Starkey said.
A great suggestion for kids was pizza and hamburgers - which could be turned into a healthy alternative.
"Most kids love pizza and you can load it up with vegetables and reduced fat cheese and make a really tasty pizza at home," she said.
A homemade hamburger can have a rissole or meat patty with vegetables in it, as well as lots of salad.
Before trying a new recipe, cook it first with the kids watching, then the second time the parents can supervise and hopefully by the third time the kids can do it themselves.
