Teachers hear writing tips from Boston speaker in Rocky
IT HAS been two years in the making and Christine Hills could not be more excited with the result.
The Rockhampton Girls Grammar principal has been working with three other schools in Queensland to bring an international presenter to Queensland schools.
Yesterday Christine's school played host to 80 teachers from New South Wales and Queensland, who listened to Rebecca DeSmith talk about the Collins Writing program.
Rebecca travelled from Boston with her husband and creator of the program in their first trip to Australia.
The presenter has been a workshop presenter for 25 years and a teacher from 1973 until about 2006.
Rebecca said she was excited to see her and her husband's work finally pay off.
"This is a trip of a lifetime to come 15 hours from the United States. It's just wonderful and we love working with children and teachers so this is special, very special."
Rebecca said she hoped the program would be implemented into schools once they left.
"We're from so far away; we really count on people like Christine to keep this going after we leave and to sustain it.
"My husband has worked so hard, his whole life on this program and it's so successful but to be able to say we're working with teachers in Australia is wonderful.
"It's amazing... to come and be able to work with teachers is an honour."
Christine said it was incredible to have the chance to learn about the Collins program from Rebecca herself.
"The purpose of the program is to encourage student writing, to improve the quality of feedback we give to students and the outcomes for kids are incredible."
Christine first found out about the program when she was studying at Harvard with 100 other principals from around the world.
"In 2014 I was fortunate enough to get the Public Education Foundation Scholarship to go to Harvard. I studied leadership over there and that is where I saw the program.
"The Marsden State High principal and I saw it (the program) presented there and we were determined to bring it to Australia."
