A PASSION for politics has already put Gympie local Laura Manton on to the political landscape.

The 21-year-old - who now lives and works in Brisbane with her equally passionate political sister, Clare - travelled to Melbourne at the weekend, for the 47th Australian Labor Party National Conference.

At the conference, Shannon Fentiman, Minister for Women and Youth, moved to reaffirm the government's backing of the 1995 Beijing Declaration - which aims to foster gender equality - on the 20 year anniversary of the declaration's commitment to women's rights.

It was seconded by Laura and Ms Fentiman waived her rights to speak on the issue, giving Laura the floor instead.

"Shannon put up the resolution and because she knows I'm so passionate about women's issues, she invited me to speak as a seconder of the motion," Laura said.

"The declaration is well known for acknowledging the unique position women have in times of conflict," she said.

"In war and conflict, an estimated 95% of casualties are civilian and the majority of those are women and children.

"But UN figures show that just 3% of people involved in peace keeping and conflict resolution roles are held by women."

Laura's mother, Sue, said she was proud of both her daughters.

"They are both committed to improving other people's lives," Mrs Manton said.

Both young women became immersed in politics while at the University of Queensland and both now work for the Queensland Government.
