LAMP funding boost

GLADSTONE Regional Council has welcomed the Queensland Government's $156,000 boost to help councils provide services for culturally diverse communities.

Council will receive $52,000 per annum over three years, the funding ensuring the continuation of its Local Area Multicultural Partnerships (LAMP) initiative, a program designed to help councils work effectively with culturally diverse communities.

Council's Community Services portfolio spokesperson Councillor Maxine Brushe said the funding meant Gladstone Regional Council can continue to employ a Multicultural Community Relations Officer whose role is specifically designed to strengthen Council's relationships with groups and individuals within our culturally diverse community.

"The Gladstone Region's rapid industrial expansion, and resulting influx of workers, is bringing an increasing number of people here to make new homes."

Cr Brushe said the LAMP initiative, which includes the Welcome to Gladstone Morning Tea and Community Information Sessions, had increased the capacity of Council staff members to provide better services for all Gladstone Region residents, including those from non-English speaking backgrounds.

"The LAMP initiative aims to achieve the State Government's objective of ensuring all Queensland residents, regardless of their cultural, linguistic or religious backgrounds, have adequate access to services and programs which fulfil their needs," Cr Brushe said.

"It can be difficult for new residents to fit comfortably into a new community and the LAMP initiative allows newcomers to participate in all aspects of life in the Gladstone Region and to enjoy a sense of community spirit and belonging to their new surroundings."
