Labor to field candidates in both Toowoomba seats

LABOR has confirmed it will field a candidate in Toowoomba South at the state election.

As anticipation builds on when the poll date will be called, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk today said the government would put up candidates in both seats.

Former minister Kerry Shine will face off against incumbent Trevor Watts in Toowoomba North, while the Toowoomba South candidate is yet to be named.

The seat is held by David Janetzki who won the seat over independent and former mayor Di Thorley at a by-election last year.

"We'll be fielding Labor candidates in both the seats," Ms Palaszczuk said yesterday.

It's understood the party is finalising its vetting of the candidate and is expected to make the announcement soon.

While she would not be drawn on the likely odds of reclaiming Toowoomba North, Ms Palaszczuk said Mr Shine had her full support.

The State Cabinet meeting and city tour were followed by a trip to Nanango where the Premier was blunt about her government's chances of winning the staunch conservative seat.

"We have very little chance of ever picking up the seat of Nanango but as a premier of this state, I will go anywhere and deliver for the people of this state," she said.

It followed a challenge from Deputy Opposition Leader and Nanango MP Deb Frecklington.

"Annastacia Palaszczuk better bring her cheque book and scratch out a re-building grant or payroll tax relief for local pork processing plant Swickers," she said.
