La La Land sweeps Golden Globe Awards
THE members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association have clearly fallen under the spell of La La Land.
The modern musical, set in Los Angeles, won all seven of the categories in which it was nominated, including Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy and the Best Actor and Actress in a Musical categories for stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.
Moonlight was named Best Motion Picture - Drama over Manchester By The Sea and the Australian-made films Hacksaw Ridge and Lion.
The biggest surprise of the night was French actress Isabelle Huppert pipping Natalie Portman and Amy Adams at the post for her performance in the foreign language film Elle.
Meryl Streep got political in her acceptance speech for the Cecile B DeMille Award, taking aim at President-Elect Donald Trump.
Real-life crime anthology The People V OJ Simpson, British crime thriller The Night Manager, Netflix's The Crown and rap comedy Atlanta were the big winners in the television categories.
Sadly there was no luck for any of the Australian nominees, which included Mel Gibson and Nicole Kidman.
Awards host Jimmy Fallon, who joked his way through a technical glitch at the beginning of the show, has received mixed feedback on social media.
While he wasn't controversial like previous host Ricky Gervais, several of Fallon's jokes including his impression of Chris Rock in his opening monologue failed to hit the mark.
Fallon's flashy opening number, which assembled an ensemble of A-list cameos to recap the biggest film and television moments of the year, has been widely praised for its high production values.
