Kids learn about our place in cosmos through Amazing Space
DID you know the moon is 380,000km from Earth?
Malachy did. Malachy is one of 60 to 70 Year 3 students at Woombye State School who have been learning about space this term.
Their classroom studies have coincided with the Sunshine Coast Daily's Amazing Space campaign, which aims to open the eyes of a new generation to the world beyond the one upon which we stand.
The Daily's Amazing Space activity books are filled with fun facts about space that were a hit with the Year 3s yesterday.
The kids were all keen to share what they had learned in class and from the books.
"I've learnt that the moon's gravity controls the waves here on Earth," said Charlotte K.
"The sun is white but from our solar system, it looks orange," said Bohdi, who was also able to offer that it rains acid and snows metal on Venus, which turns out to be true.
Some of the kids were still coming to grips with their space terminology.
"The Earth is actually round. It's a spear," said Eddie, who was quickly informed by the other kids he should have said "sphere".
The same happened to Alex. "The Earth is spinning on its axle," he said, realising he meant "axis" as quickly as the other kids did.
To get a grip on some space facts yourself, pick up an Amazing Space activity book and free 3D glasses at your local newsagency.
A token which can be redeemed for a sticker card at newsagencies with two stickers plus cool instant prizes to win will be printed in the
Daily every day until June 6.
