Kids: Be animal keepers for a day at Macadamia Castle

KIDS will get the chance to walk with the animals, talk with the animals, clean, sweep and feed all the animals for a day as Macadamia Castle's shadow animal keeper.

The one-day workshops will give budding animal carers the chance to spend time behind the scenes with one of the Knockrow centre's senior keepers.

Animal keeper Tayte Jeffreson said they were "super excited" to have enthusiastic animal lovers trail them for a day.

"It gives them (the students) a really good idea of what's involved," she said.

"A lot of people do tend to think that we just cuddle animals all day but there's lots of husbandry and cleaning required to make sure the animal's standard is at a high."

Ms Jeffreson said her average day as a keeper began with a morning meeting to discuss what was happening throughout the day and any issues that had arisen.

Then it was to the enclosures and pens for cleaning, before the animals were fed.

The Macadamia Castle has daily farmyard baby animal feeds at 11.15am and 2.15pm, as well as a meet the crocodiles and other reptiles sessions, rabbit petting, kangaroo and emu feeding, meet the wombat and frog conservation pod keeper talk in the mornings and afternoons.

Macadamia Castle owner Tony Gilding said it was a great opportunity for parents and students looking for fun and supervised holiday activities.

"There's a lot of people that are considering careers in animal keeping so it's a really good opportunity for them spending a whole day with a keeper and seeing what they do," he said.
