Creating Keppel Kraken a dream job
MAKING life-size dinosaurs or natural rock structures most of the time, Natureworks' owner David Joffe says working on Yeppoon's Keppel Kraken water play feature was a "dream job".
His company has worked on many different sculptures created for zoos, aviaries, cultural centres, theme parks, botanical gardens, shopping malls, aquaria, playgrounds and museums.
But this week he was on the Capricorn Coast to see the installation of two more sea creature sculptures at the water play area.
The additional creatures include a sea turtle and starfish measuring three metres in diameter.
David said having worked on many projects since establishing his Brisbane-based company in 1979, this one gave him a little more creative freedom.
"This has been a great project or a dream project for me really. I don't often have the opportunity to have this much fun as I did with this one," he told The Morning Bulletin this week.
David said the intricate sea creatures bronze-casted on the underbellies of the Kraken tentacles were a theme they hoped to emulate throughout the further stages of the foreshore redevelopment.
"We've realised we can apply that theme as a rainforest theme or an Aboriginal theme as well," David said.
"You can miniaturise a whole lot of creatures from the forest or ocean or whatever and then apply it to flat wall or curved surface to give the effect.
"We'd really like to pay tribute to the Aboriginal presence and their history in this area because I think it would be great to have something to remind us of our ancestors."
Livingstone Mayor Bill Ludwig said the sea turtle and starfish would complement the other sculptures in the wet area of the water play feature.
"These specially designed artworks were created specifically for the Keppel Kraken and are synonymous with the Capricorn Coast," Cr Ludwig said.
