Kelly on mission to help poor

KELLY Edser is a 15-year-old on a mission.

Her clear and decisive plan for her future is already beginning to take shape as she sets out on the biggest adventure of her life so far.

She has managed to convince her parents to let her spend three weeks as a volunteer at a hospital in Curahuasi, Peru, helping the poorest of the poor.

The hospital was set up by close family friend and former Toowoomba radiologist Lyndal Maxwell.

"Lyndal has known me since I was a baby and after hearing her speak when she was in Toowoomba recently, I knew I wanted to go over and try it for myself," Kelly said.

"I would love to study to become a GP when I finish school and as soon as I finish my studies I would love to follow in Lyndal's footsteps, especially if this trip is as great as I expect it to be."

Kelly's father Ross, who will accompany Kelly on her trip, said he was hesitant at first to let his young daughter travel to Peru.

"Initially, I was sceptical and questioned whether Kelly was clear minded enough to do it," he said.

"But she just had so much focus and we wanted to help her really dial that in."

Although getting involved in the daily operations of the hospital will take up most of their time, the father and daughter duo also intend on taking in a few other sights Peru and South America has to offer.

"Dad is a huge camera nut so he has a few things on his list he wants to see as well," Kelly said.

"I suppose we could probably fit in time for him as well."

The Edsers will fly out during the June/July school holidays.
