SINGING a classic Brooks & Dunn song helped Ipswich musician Neil Douglas win a south-east Queensland karaoke competition last weekend.

The budding country musician received a welcome career boost when he won Mama Lou's Karoke competition at Caboolture.

Mr Douglas competed against more than a dozen finalists to take out the top prize - a recording session at a Brisbane studio.

His rendition of Brooks & Dunn's Boot Scootin' Boogie wowed celebrity judges, The Voice winner Karise Eden and acclaimed lyricist Alan Bergman, who has written film soundtracks and songs for Celine Dion.

"It was great to be chosen as the winner by these two judges because of their experience in the industry; it meant a lot," Mr Douglas said.

Mr Douglas will use the prize to focus on his career, writing and singing originals.

"I've already got some songs in mind for the session," he said.

"I have a few originals that I've written and I want to use the prize to record an EP."

Mr Douglas said he was a big country music fan, and he believed Brooks & Dunn's music was timeless.

"I travel quite a bit to perform, I was in Murwillumbah recently and I've also had gigs in Ipswich," he said.

"I love country music and I love the lifestyle; I go all out and wear my boots and hat at shows."
