LAUGHTER and enjoyment were the key ingredients to yesterday's "MasterChef" demonstration from Rockhampton's Janette Moulder.

That was on top of the marinated kangaroo kebabs and chicken simur (vermicelli) dish she had brewing on her stovetop.

Many jokes were shared in North Rockhampton's Girls Time Out kitchen, on Musgrave St, as part of Rockhampton NAIDOC week celebrations.

Yesterday the Girls Time Out premises hosted the MasterChef - Deadly Kaikai's event, which allowed locals to see the techniques and ingredients used to create sumptuous Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander food.

On the menu yesterday was a banana leaf-wrapped damper baked in the oven, sop sop (sweet potato, banana, potato and taro poached in a coconut cream mixture), chicken simur and marinated kangaroo kebabs.

The participants at the event had the opportunity to jot down the ingredients and methods to make the dishes and then try it out for themselves.

In Janette's opinion, sharing kitchen duties with loved ones and laughs helped turn cooking from a "chore" into something enjoyable.

Admittedly, among the kitchen banter, Janette said she learnt her skills in the kitchen from her mum.

"It was often a chore for me sometimes," she laughed.

"We encourage our families to cook out of enjoyment."
