Glorious Glee snatches 15th hockey premiership title running
GLEE clinched its 15th straight Far North Coast A-grade women's hockey premiership with a 4-0 win over Ballina.
The defending champions were on top from the outset on the synthetic turf at Hepburn Park, Goonellabah.
They had a near miss and a penalty corner in the first five minutes without scoring a goal.
Kim Chappell was directing traffic in attack for Glee and Corrina Busse for Ballina, with all the play appearing to be developed by them.
Ballina competed well but the pressure finally told in the final 10 minutes of the first half when Nicole Hetherington scored a soft goal for Glee.
Ballina created two penalty corners straight after the goal but could not convert.
They then needed some resolute defence to deny Glee from consecutive penalty corners just before half-time.
Ballina's discipline dropped off in the second half and at one point they were playing with only nine but still Glee could not budge the defence.
Midway through the half and playing against 10, Ash Danvers scored with a back-stick shot to give Glee a 2-0 advantage.
Almost immediately Kim Chappell converted a penalty corner for Glee to go up 3-0.
Chappell scored her second a few minutes after with a back-stick shot past a stretching Lily Cronin in goals.
Ballina tried hard to peg one back but their efforts were in vain.
Chappell was named player of the grand final on Saturday, while Cronin and Holly Anderson were Ballina's best players.
The other women's grand final winners were Ballina in A res-erve, Alstonville in B1 and Summerlanders in B2.
