Joy-riding pooch enjoys day out for federal election

GLEN Steinhardt tore down the streets of Wondai on his BMW GS1200, ready to vote in the federal election on Saturday morning.

The line-up at the polling booth was 20-deep and he was worried if he lingered too long he'd pick a fight with someone supporting an opposing party.

He was equally worried his wife wouldn't appreciate him speaking out of turn, so he decided to remain on his best behaviour.

No stranger to politics, Glen was a three-term Murgon shire councillor back in the '90s, up until just before the amalgamation.

He spent most of his life farming at Murgon, and these days he enjoys the slower-paced ways of life in Wondai.

When he sold his property he bought the bike and travelled all around the Burnett, exploring the region.

On the shorter trips, Monty - his 12-year-old chihuahua x - comes with him.

"When we got him he was just a tiny little fella. He's 11 or 12 years old now. And he's been riding in the back that whole time.”

Glen did the handiwork on the motorbike top box himself.

"I cut out all the holes and Monty just took straight to it,” he said.

"In the summertime I added a few more holes for ventilation, and there's padding in there too.”

Glen said there used to be padding around the hole Monty pokes his head out of as well.

"He got a bit bigger, and now he's got plenty of his own fur padding,” he laughed.

"He gets most upset if he can't come with me.

"He seems to sense when I'm going for a ride, he just knows.

"I just go and get the paper, check the mail, that sort of thing, and he's always with me.”
