Jewels to sparkle at Toowoomba's Gemfest

GEMS of all shapes and sizes will glitter in all their glory at a big Toowoomba event.

Gemfest is now in its 37th year and is hosted by the Toowoomba Lapidary Club.

Gemfest publicity officer Beverley Radke said visitors to the event would find jewellery, precious gemstones, bead supplies, fossil specimens, opals, pearls and more.

"You can even create your own unique piece of jewellery - purchase a setting from one of the inside stall holders, select a previous cut gemstone to fit that setting and have it set while you wait," she said.

"First time visitors to Gemfest are always blown away when they enter the assembly hall."

There will also be jewellery raffle prizes to be won as well as lucky door prizes.

The major prize is a natural Sapphire ring set in 9ct gold, with two diamond side stones, valued at $1400.

Gemfest will also give visitors the chance to have their stones identified, with Rod Brightman offering his services for free.

"Rod's gem-testing skills have become so popular, that he had had to limit the number of items each person brings along to have identified," Ms Radke said.

There will be more than 60 stall holders at Gemfest on October 21 and 22.

It will be held at Centenary Heights State High School from 9am to 5pm on Saturday and 9am to 3pm on Sunday.
