Jetstar cans Coast NZ route
JETSTAR has cut flights from Gold Coast Airport to New Zealand.
The carrier has moved a twice weekly Queenstown service from the Gold Coast to Sydney.
A Jetstar spokeswoman said the move was because of demand from Sydney.
"We are not going to continue to operate the Queenstown service to the Gold Coast," the spokeswoman said. "Sydney would be a good market for our Queenstown route, so that is why we made that decision."
Jetstar Australia and New Zealand chief executive officer David Hall said in a statement the airline was offering better value for customers by flying from Sydney.
The cancellation of flights from Gold Coast to Queenstown comes in the same week the Gold Coast Airport reported a drop in passenger numbers for August compared to the same time last year.
Gold Coast Airport recorded 419,069 passengers in August, a decrease of 7.5% year-on-year.
Queensland Airports Limited managing director Dennis Chant said there were a few factors contributing to the fall.
"While we experienced a reduction in capacity at Gold Coast Airport due largely to the grounding of Tiger Airways, we welcomed their return to Gold Coast skies on August 31 and are working with the airline to build capacity into the region," Mr Chant said. "Gold Coast Airport continues to proactively drive co-operative marketing activity with both our domestic and international airline partners to promote the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers regions."
The change in the Jetstar route from Gold Coast to Sydney begins on December 23.
