Jess and Norm soar to lofty heights on The Block
COAST parents Jess Eva and Norm Hogan have landed in butter on The Block.
The reality renovation show started on Sunday night, with the five teams asked to deliver a children's bedroom in just 48 hours.
The scores from that challenge determined the order in which they chose which apartments they would renovate in the infamous Gatwick Hotel in St Kilda.
Despite finishing in fourth place on tonight's episode, the parents scored one of two penthouse apartments.
"We Bradburry'd it," Ms Eva told the Daily.
"We're so lucky. We got on and for some reason someone was looking out for us. Fate just gave us a bit of a free swing this time."
Even the show's host Scott Cam and executive producer Julian Cress were perplexed when challenge winners Hayden and Sara chose a second-floor apartment rather than a penthouse.
"I think it's a debate people will be having for a long time. It doesn't make sense to us," Cress said.
"We always thought the penthouses were so attractive and so different that everybody would be fighting to get them.
"On paper the penthouses are better, but that doesn't mean somebody can't win from any position. We've seen it happen plenty of times in the past."
The development will set Mr Hogan and Ms Eva up for future success on the show. Not only will they be working with a freshly built structure on top of the Gatwick, meaning less demolition work, they will be in a good position come auction day with stunning views and rooftop terraces.
They shot up to second favourite to win the show according to Ladbrokes, and are now sitting at $3.50 behind front-runners Kerrie and Spence, who are on $2.50.
"How many people get to renovate a penthouse in St Kilda? I just really want to do the building justice," Ms Eva said.
"I just need to get my head down and bum up and make it as beautiful as I possibly can. We want this apartment to be something families will want to hand down through the generations because it's too good to sell."
Former professional netball players Bianca Chatfield and Carla Dziwoki scored the other penthouse apartment after finishing third in the 48-hour challenge.
Mr Hogan and Ms Eva couldn't think of better neighbours to have during a stressful building project.
"I'm not very sporty, so it's the most unlikely little friendship out of everybody. We just adore them," Ms Eva said.
"They've got the same work ethic as us, and they understand teamwork is better than working by yourself."
The Block continues tomorrow night at 7.30pm on Channel 9.
