Japan rocked by earthquake off the coast of Tokyo

THE US Geological Survey (USGS) has reported a magnitude 6.4 earthquake off the coast of Tokyo.

The quake struck the sparsely populated Izu islands south-southeast of Japan's main Island, Honshu, Associated Press reports

The USGS said the quake hit around 1:21am local time on Wednesday. 

The epicentre was located 617km south-southeast of Tokyo at a depth of around 10km.

There have been no immediate reports of damage and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre says no warnings are in effect.
