J and J to celebrate the good food our farmers produce

JUMPERS and Jazz is moving into culinary tourism with a big addition to its program.

The Celebration of Local Flavours will run through Saturday, July 28, at the top end of Palmerin St, near the ANZ bank, is set for a bumper weekend with more space devoted to the event.

It will bring local produce direct to the public.

Events co-ordinator Pam Burley said the idea started as a way to help the region's farmers.

"I was doing some drought relief work with the Southern Downs Regional Council and I had been working with Helen Lewis from Landcare to build the profile of the local producers in the region," Ms Burley said.

The pair are working on a food map that could promote culinary tourism.

"We thought Jumpers and Jazz would be a wonderful launch pad for this," Ms Burley said.

"The public can meet the farmers, meet the producers, taste the local produce, and increase their overall awareness of what is available in the Southern Downs."

At the last count there'll be more than 20 farmers manning their stalls and selling their food.

Four cafes will each offer menu items using local produce.

Just Because is doing a pulled beef roll that uses meat from Carabeen Beef while Little Gallery Café will use meat from Mallow Organic Lamb to make a sweet lamb curry.

Belle Vue Café will throw together a charcuterie board using local cheeses and small goods from Stanthorpe along with Coolunda Olives.

Landcare will also have stall for the farmers that can't make it in on the day.

To add an extra layer of foodie flair, Ms Burley has booked a couple of Masterchef participants who will run cooking demonstrations on a stage near the post office.

Celebration of Local Flavours will run on Saturday, July 28.
