It’s hit and miss but a well-done remake is classic
FOND memories of my childhood revolve around television.
Forget a sleep in, I was always up early on Saturday mornings to watch all the cartoons.
It was the early '80s, so the options included classics like Scooby Doo, Captain Cave Man and all the Looney Tunes gang.
It wasn't a real Sunday night in our house without Wonderful World of Disney.
And while it sounds like I spent my younger life sitting on the couch, I also remember summer holidays outside exploring the countryside. It might have something to do with my dad taking over the television set to watch the seemingly never-ending cricket.
That was back in the days of one television a household. Today it is more like one television a room.
Back in those 'old days' everyone watched the same shows on television. Not because we all had the same taste, mind you. It was because there were only two television channels to choose from.
Fast forward to today and not only do we have several channels on free-to-air television we have the option to pay for extra, watch online or buy them on DVD. So many television shows and movies, so little time.
When it comes to movies, I have always been determined to educate my son on the classics. For years his list of favourite movies included old classics like Labyrinth, The Never Ending Story and Ghostbusters.
While I love sharing my old-school tastes with him, I love that so many of the good old movies are getting a makeover.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is one example where both versions have their own merits.
They don't always work. Take Karate Kid and Herbie Fully Loaded. Take them far away.
That said, I'm looking forward to a planned remake of Drop Dead Fred with Russell Brand and loving the rumours of a modern version of The Never Ending Story in the hands of Leonardo DiCaprio.
I'm even quite happy to hear of a remake of Annie. I think my son will be happiest of all to hear Ghostbusters 3 might be blasting onto our screens next year.
But rumours of another sequel to Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, starring Justin Beiber, oh I wish they were bogus.
Please don't party on dudes - the party is surely over.
