It's a schoolie-free zone
IN A bid to entice families to the southern Gold Coast, Burleigh Heads businesses are marketing themselves as a schoolies-free zone.
While many holidaymakers shy away from the Gold Coast during schoolies season in fear of school leavers drunk on their first taste of freedom, it seems the marketing ploy may be working.
Gemini Court Holiday Apartments owner Kris Racette has billed his business as the perfect family holiday destination to escape the threat of schoolies.
"Even though schoolies is coming up it's still the perfect time to holiday in the southern Gold Coast, it's extremely quiet and safe," Mr Racette said.
"Spring is also the best weather we have all year so it's the perfect time for families to visit.
"Kids taking part in schoolies tend to stay down the other end of the coast, near Surfers Paradise, so they are not an issue here."
Despite the idyllic and peaceful Burleigh Heads setting Mr Racette said school leavers sometimes still try to book accommodation at his business.
"We do get calls from kids trying to book accommodation for schoolies, you can tell by somebody's phone manner if they are under 20," Mr Racette said.
"We would never discriminate against anybody but we do point out to them that there are no activities here for them and they would be happier at the other end of the coast.
"We have owned this business for six years and we have never had any trouble from schoolies but some people still avoid the Gold Coast altogether because they hear so much about schoolies."
Schoolies on the Gold Coast will take place between Saturday, November 19, and Friday, November 25.
Police, emergency services, security guards and officials will maintain a highly visible presence, providing the community with additional support.
