Mario Bernardi

IT was Easter Saturday and friendly truckie Mario Bernardi was sitting under a shaded area outside the Portsmith Roadhouse near Mareeba enjoying a bite to eat.

Mario drives an International Eagle for SITA Environmental Solutions and had been up at 4am that morning to pick up rubbish at Port Douglas which is off the Captain Cook Highway north of Cairns.

"I mainly carry rubbish between Cairns and Mareeba and often stop off at this roadhouse. I took that load and dropped it off at Cairns and then picked up another," he said.

"The food is great and the staff are happy and give good service."

A driver for 20 years, Mario had recently been to Melbourne for the gala truck show and enjoyed it.

Mario also is glad that autumn has come and the weather in the far north is not as hot as it has been during the summer.

"It gets quite nippy in the morning up here," he said.

"Winter is not far away as well. I love working up here."
