Internet shut-down could leave customers in the lurch

MARANOA residents and businesses still relying on the Interim Satellite Service for internet need to make the switch now.

That is the message from NBN Co, who reminded customers the ISS will be shut down permanently on Tuesday, February 28.

NBN's State corporate affairs manager, Kylie Lindsay, said the switch from ISS to its replacement, NBN Sky Muster satellite, was not automatic.

"We have been working with our retail service providers for some time now to notify ISS users that they need to switch over to another NBN service,” Ms Lindsay said.

"However, despite our best efforts to contact people, we anticipate there will be a number of people left without a service by the end of the month.”

At its peak, around 40,000 premises were connected to ISS, and over 1000 premises across the country have still not taken action to connect to a different service, Ms Lindsay said.

While exact figures for the Maranoa region were not available, Ms Lindsay said around 270 Queensland premises would be affected by the shut-down.

Ms Lindsay said customers who take action to switch over now will likely not be connected before the shut-down occurred, but could of course make do with mobile solutions in the meantime.

To make the switch, residents and businesses were encouraged to contact their preferred internet service provide to discuss requirements.
