Interested in getting into a new sport?

ARE you looking for a new sport to get started in? Then this Sunday's Sports Expo and Sign-on Day is for you.

More than 100 exhibitions will be at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre from 9am-1pm, showing off their sport to the public.

Among them will be something different.

Ultimate Frisbee is a relatively new sport taking flight in Mackay.

The Mackay Ultimate Frisbee League will have a stall at Sunday's annual event.

Mackay Ultimate Frisbee's Brenton Williamson became hooked on the non-contact, team sport when he played while at university in Brisbane.

"The biggest thing I enjoy about Ultimate Frisbee is the people and the culture around it," he said.

"Ultimate Frisbee is played with zero referees, so it is all self-officiated.

"We run around on about a half-a-soccer-sized field and we throw the frisbee to each other until someone scores (in an end zone)."

Williamson said the sport, which was popular in the United States, was literally "taking off" in Australia.

"It's a lot bigger in universities…but at the moment I think there are about 10,000 people playing across Australia," he said.

"It's bigger down south in Brisbane but is slowly taking off in Mackay. It is pretty social in Mackay but is just starting to pick up now into regular games once a week."

Williamson said players could be as social or competitive as they liked.

"Last year the Brisbane team I played on finished second in the nationals in Perth," he said.

Williamson said some of the players on his team have represented Australia.

"Some are even going to the World Games … they're going over to represent Australia this year."

Williamson said anyone wanting to play Ultimate Frisbee could turn up at the touch football fields in Norris Rd on Tuesdays from 5.30pm.

"If you don't find us there you can find us on Facebook with Mackay Ultimate Frisbee League," he said.
