SOAPBOX: Watching people sing on TV? No thanks

I ROLLED my eyes as I watched them cry over spilt milk.

I questioned their sanity as I watched them enter a high-pressure home renovation with a loved one.

But when it came to watching reality TV show contestants sing, I threw my hands up in defeat.

One can only take so much, so I drew the line at The Voice.

For those of you lucky enough to not have been exposed to the horrors of this reality television train wreck, Voice contestants sing to the turned backs of the judging panel.

Judged on their voice alone, the contestant will only get through to the next round if one, or all, of the judges turn their chair around.

You would think this would ensure a higher standard of singing.

The only thing more painful than the crass crooners they let through to the next round is the judges themselves, who act like each singer is God's gift to music.

I watched in disbelief as they fought over a contestant whose singing inspired me, not to move mountains for love, but to put my TV on mute.

It makes you question whether they really are judged on their voice, on whether a producer is in their ear telling them to turn around because the contestant's love-to-hate personality will boost ratings.

I would bet money on the latter.

I have had enough of the reality TV that saturates our screens each night.

So in a bid to save my sanity, I'm switching off.

Sorry reality TV but you can not accept this rose, my chair is staying on solid ground and I'm only giving you a combined score of one out of 10.
