Hurricanes snatch late victory

HURRICANES hooker Dane Coles scored a try four minutes after the hooter to give the Hurricanes an unlikely 28-25 victory over the Chiefs in Wellington tonight.

Coles' 85th minute five-pointer put a serious dent in the Chiefs' dreams of claiming top spot on the Super Rugby ladder, while the Hurricanes gave themselves a mathematical chance to still grab a playoff spot.

Neither side were able to claim the bonus-point win they needed but the victory propelled the Hurricanes to 57 competition points.

Their fate will be determined by the Crusaders, Bulls, Sharks and Reds who play during the weekend, while the Chiefs hold a two-point advantage over the Stormers at the top of the table.

The Stormers host the lowly Rebels in Cape Town on Sunday morning (NZT) and only need two points from the game to finish top of the Super Rugby ladder and guarantee home advantage throughout the playoffs.
