How Coast boutique is changing lives every day
NOOSAVILLE retailer Karen Omerod believes giving is something people can do every day.
Ms Omerod owns clothing boutique Kobomo, a tiny shop in Noosa Village.
Over the past five years, Ms Omerod and the customers have made 199,492 "impacts" to a variety of projects including providing support to farmers, giving life-saving water and access to medical care.
"We operate as a 'Business for Good' through global giving initiative Buy1Give1 or B1G1," she said.
"Every time you buy a piece of clothing in our shop, we give something back. Currently we're providing one day of tuition to a disadvantaged girl in Cambodia for every item sold."
She explained how so much can be achieved by giving small amounts every day, rather than one donation a year.
Since starting 10 years ago, B1G1 has attracted more than 2150 business members who have collectively created more than 100 million giving impacts.
"We are grateful to have the opportunity through B1G1 to make small, regular contributions to the lives of individuals in need. With hundreds of businesses around the world doing the same, it all adds up," Ms Omerod said.
The women working at Kobomo also share the desire to make a positive impact in the world.
"Our work provides the vehicle to support each other as well as other women in our community and the world, but the giving can only happen with the help of our customers who find out about the projects on our swing tags," Ms Omerod said.
"Yes, we need to sell enough frocks to justify our existence, but it is not the reason we open our doors each day.
"Giving to those who need a hand up should be something that is woven into our lives; something we do every day."
Global charity event Giving Tuesday is on November 28, and is the perfect time to start making an impact.
Last year the campaign raised more than $168 million in charitable donations worldwide.
