Six schools from across the region descended on Roma for the Brisbane International Red Ball Schools' Challenge.

The competition is a mixed team challenge for Year 4 students to encourage participation, provide a positive experience and give students the opportunity to represent their school in a team environment.

Students from Injune, Surat, Wallumbilla, Yuleba, Arcadia and Roma State College took part in the event on Friday.

The winning team, the Surat Serpents, have been invited to compete at the state final, which will be held at the Brisbane International in January 2018. Roma State College's gold team was runner-up.

Tennis Queensland's Jenni Hakl said the Hot Shots program levelled the playing field.

"It's a program designed to help every child, no matter their age or ability, jump in and start playing tennis,” she said.

Hot Shots is played on smaller courts with modified equipment, including lighter racquets, lower nets and low compression balls that don't bounce too high.

Hakl said Hot Shots was not only heaps of fun, but it was also a great way to encourage kids to maintain an active lifestyle.

"Coming west to run the program for these kids has been really special,” she said.

"It breaks down the barriers and means anyone can access the game.”

The competition is held for students in 40 locations across Queensland, with the winning team of each region heading to the Brisbane International.
