Hospital's Australia Day display a hit with patients

NO bones about it, Mackay Base Hospital sure knows how to celebrate a special occasion.

The hospital's Medical Imaging department have put together a curious Australia Day display, featuring a skeleton model in an Aussie cossie.

Inspired by their Christmas decorating success, radiology service manager Laurelle Dowden and her team have introduced regular themes into their waiting room.

"We decided after Christmas that it was a little boring in the waiting room after we took down the decorations and so we decided to introduce a regular theme where we would decorate the waiting area and staff would dress up,” she said.

"This month we have decorated in an Australia Day theme.”

Ms Dowden said the decorations bring "many smiles to their patient's faces”.

"So far there has been really positive feedback from the patients and they think it is a wonderful idea,” she said.

"People aren't coming in to see us because they are well and if we can put a smile on one person's face it is all worth it.”

Apparently, the decorations have also created a buzz around the hospital with staff in other departments also getting in the spirit.

"Our team here work really hard so they are really pumped to get involved by dressing up and having a bit of fun while at work,” Ms Dowden said.

"People are already starting to ask what we will be doing next so it creates a bit of excitement around the hospital.”

It does take a bit of time to plan and decorate each month, Ms Dowden said, but a number of staff get involved.

"We all do it in our own time so it is wonderful for team bonding and everyone donates for the decorations out of their own pockets,” she said.

"If you are in the Mackay Base Hospital make sure you pop in and say hello to the team and to see what we do next!”
