Gladstone hospital roof chosen for new phone tower

It looks like it could be a crown for the hospital or an alien space station.

Yet, it's neither, it's actually a new mobile phone tower that will soon benefit Optus users.

The tower, which is still under construction, will improve the 4G Plus and 3G mobile coverage for Optus users.

"Towers surrounding the CBD and Round Hill will experience less traffic and deliver an improved network experience across the area," an Optus spokesperson said.

"The new tower will reduce traffic on surrounding towers across the CBD and Round Hill to deliver an improved network experience across the area."

It's expected the tower will be ready to use by mid-2016.
