SCHOOL'S officially out for summer, and we're now well into the first week of holidays.

For NSW high school and primary school students, the holidays will continue until January 27, when term one of the new year begins.

For our lucky Queensland counterparts, school holidays kicked off on December 11 and won't end until January 27.

For everyone else, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, the Boxing Day Holiday - which falls on Monday, December 28 - and New Year's Day are public holidays.

The most recent outlook from the Bureau of Meteorology shows a 75% chance of the Northern Rivers exceeding the median amount of rainfall for the January to March period, with warmer than average temperatures.

With a large amount of holiday-goers expected on the roads these summer holidays, NSW Police are urging drivers to arrive alive this festive season with a high-visibility state-wide operation until January 26.

The aim of the six-week campaign is to reduce the state's road toll which currently sits at 338, which is 38 more than the same time last year.

Deputy Commissioner Specialist Operations Catherine Burn urged drivers to avoid taking risks and behave responsibly.

"For far too long, the irresponsible decisions made by a few have left a tragic impact on many. Families, friends and communities all suffer as a result of one wrong decision and it is time for that to stop," she said.

"We will have the NSW Highway Patrol, assisted by local police, out on the roads to remind motorists of their responsibility.

"While we will put every resource available into the operation, it is up to road users to do the right thing."
