Heels height of fashion

SKY-HIGH pumps have been ruling women's wardrobes this summer and the trend is set to carry us through to winter.

According to Wittners store manager Unica Estabillo, ultra high heels will not be going out of fashion any time soon.

"The bright platform chunky wedges have been walking out the door," Ms Estabillo said.

Mackay shoppers had been snapping-up tall stilettos and platform heels as well, she said.

"Platform heels are very popular; some of them have a hidden platform and once you take out the height of the platform they are no higher than your average heel."

Podiatry Mackay podiatrist Rebecca Calligan said the ideal height for women's heels was 5cm.

"When you wear high heels, your weight is shifted forward onto the forefront of your foot," Ms Calligan said.

"It also makes your stride shorter... and limits the movement of your foot because your big toe cannot operate properly."

Ms Calligan said high heels also could be linked to callouses and corns on women's feet.

However, she said high heels were fine when they were worn sparingly.

"Hey, everything in moderation," she said.

The best way to select a shoe was to find one with a sturdy sole, Ms Calligan said.

She also recommended using gel cushioning.

Mackay shopper Lisa King said she had been wearing high heels since she was 16 and the secret to comfort was platform shoes and Party Feet - a brand of gel cushion that sits underneath the ball of your foot to alleviate pain.

Ms Estabillo said all Wittners shoes had either strong leather soles or Spanish resined soles.
