Habana Rural Fire Brigade gives bravery award to young girl

A YOUNG girl has received a bravery award for her courageous efforts after she alerted rural firefighters about a potentially dangerous fire.

Habana Rural Fire Brigade had been fighting a vegetation fire which was threatening a property in the Habana area on September 21.

After putting the fire out with a truck load of water and foam, the brigade asked the neighbour of the property, Nerida Fletcher, to keep an eye on the area in case of a flare up.

Mrs Fletcher's daughter, 8-year-old Mikayla, woke up at 5.30am on September 23 to get a drink and she noticed flames in the distance on the fireground.

Knowing that the area was well alight, Ms Fletcher quickly alerted her mum who immediately called triple zero.

The Habana Rural Fire Brigade arrived as soon as possible and used four truck loads of water to put out the fire.

The actions of Ms Fletcher prompted the Habana Rural Fire Brigade to give her a commendation for her bravery and her mum said she couldn't be more proud of her daughter.

"For her to do that so early in the morning, I'm extremely proud of her because not many people are up out of bed that age,” Mrs Fletcher said.

"It's extremely important to teach your kids how to respond in emergency situations especially in areas with plenty of vegetation”.
