Gyms bent on blood

BILLY the blood drop is visiting gym members across Mackay encouraging people to donate blood, as part of the Australian Red Cross Blood Service's Gyms Challenge.

Eight gyms across Mackay have signed up to take part in the state challenge to improve the health of patients in need - and give their gym a fighting chance at taking out the title.

About 37 donations have already been made as part of the challenge, with 99 pledges from gym members.

Evoke Fitness has so far contributed 10 donations to the tally and manager Jo May-Jolley is hoping that taking out the title will be no stretch.

"Whilst we're vying for the trophy, the best reward is knowing that our donations are helping cancer patients, new mothers and people with blood disorders," Ms May-Jolley said.

"Donating blood and saving three lives feels as rewarding as a good workout, and you don't even have to break a sweat!"

Blood Service community relations officer Pippa Peach said it was not too late for gym goes to get involved.

"Gym members are sharing their good heath across the state and Mackay have already helped 111 patients, by pumping their blood," Ms Peach said.

"But we need even more potential donors to get involved, to ensure we're prepared to meet the future demand for blood."

Take the challenge and help blood patients get healthy! To donate call 13 14 95 or visit donateblood.com.au.
