GUY Sebastian will represent Australia as our first ever wild card entrant at Eurovision.

The 60th annual song contest will be held in Vienna, Austria in May.

It's the first time Australia has ever competed in the televised contest, seen by an estimated 180 million viewers around the world.

"The performance will be a celebration of Australian music and culture," said a statement on the Eurovision website.

ARIA-winner Sebastian, who was the inaugural winner of Australian Idol, said it was an exciting opportunity.

This morning's announcement in Sydney quickly shot to the top of the Twitter trends list.

"It is the biggest music event in the world with an amazing history and tradition and I'm truly honoured to be invited to represent Australia in its first time ever in the competition," he said.

"It's such a huge audience and such a huge production...it sounds a bit random but we're a wild card entry and I'm stoked to have been chosen.

"The song we end up choosing, for me, will be something I want to move people with... whatever I do I want it to cut through."

Last year Jessica Mauboy performed at Eurovision, although not as a competitor.

Counting Australia this year, 38 countries compete in the contest.

ABBA is the most successful Eurovision Song Contest winner. After taking out the 1974 title the Swedish pop band went on to international fame and chart success.

SBS will broadcast the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest live from Vienna on May 22 to 24.
