Guiding future actors in the region

ACTRESS Seraya Young recently arrived in the North Burnett region with a full schedule of acting engagements.

Ms Young arived on August 13, and the main reason for her visit was to present the final parts of the RADF-funded Storyteller's Project, a collaboration with writer Jill Slack, arts facilitator Rachel Koster and students of Eidsvold High School, and a North Burnett masterclass.

Ms Koster said it was fantastic to see so many new faces at the masterclass, some having travelled four hours to attend.

"It's so vital to provide performing arts and other artistic self expression opportunities to residents of regional areas because without these, some may not find a way to express themselves, and others may miss the chance to realise a hidden talent they have not yet discovered,” she said.

She said through the project students found their voices in both writing and acting and found confidence.

"Thank you to all the kids who took part and every school which shuffled their timetable to accommodate us,” she said.

Ms Young said the Storyteller's Project workshops were a wonderful experience and the masterclass was great.

"With return students from last year and plenty of new participants we had a full class of keen and enthusiastic actors ready to dive in to a range of exercises and scenes to further develop and expand their acting skills,” she said.

Ms Young's trips to the North Burnett are part of an annual schedule.

She said creativity was an incredible life skill to encourage in everyone, especially children.

"We are all born creators. In our lives we all create in one way or another,” she said.

"We had a great time visiting Gayndah and Binjour schools, following on and adding to the skill set of creating characters, and using leading centres, centre of gravity, and rhythm to give breadth, depth and contrasts to create more texture in scenes.”
