Guide highlights cycling event

THE inaugural FKG Tour of Toowoomba cycling event was an outstanding success, but organisers aren't resting on their laurels.

Last year was the first year the event came to the Garden City and it will make a return on June 17-19 this year.

As the event grows, so too does its promotion and Tour organisers have recently invested in a 16-page booklet, detailing the event and icnluding an interview with 2010 winner Patrick Shaw, who was glowing in his praise of the Tour of Toowoomba.

Tour spokesman John Osborne said 20,000 programs had been printed and they would be distributed nationally as inserts into leading cycling magazines.

"The purpose of introducing the guide is to attract more cyclists, and those interested in the sport, to the Toowoomba region for the weekend the event is on," Mr Osborne said.

"This year the Endeavour Community Challenge ride will cater for three different levels of fitness and there are more opportunities, not just for those people wanting to come and watch the Tour but also for those looking to race."

Recreational riders will also be given the chance to ride with Australian cycling legend Phil Anderson, who will ride the Endeavour Challenge.

Osborne is adamant everyone will see a bigger and better version of the Tour of Toowoomba in 2011.

"We were a bit like flying an aeroplane blind last year," Mr Osborne said.

"We only had nine weeks to put it all together last year, but we managed a successful event and it will be even better this time around."
