Good teams win no matter what the tactics are
SOCCER: Football Central Premier League ladder leaders Clinton overcame a defensive Southside United to win 1-0 in Rockhampton on Saturday night.
Co-captain Mitch Innocend scored the only goal of the game at the sixth minute and assistant coach Dan Horton admitted he expected more goals from that point against a side which sit sixth on the seven-team ladder.
"We thought we'd kick on from there and bag a few goals, however they never came," he said.
"We controlled the entire game and I don't think Southside even had a shot on goal."
Horton said there's plenty to work on and Clinton went away from its usual game style.
"Our performance was very ordinary and we were pushing needless passes which turned over a lot of ball," he said.
"We weren't our usual selves which is being patient, keeping possession and breaking teams down with ball and player movement and we were very wasteful in front of goal.
"Good teams win ugly sometimes so we will take the three points and move on."
Anthony Cobb was named player of the match and Horton praised at his hardness in the midfield.
He stressed much improvement is needed with a block of testing matches.
"We definitely need to rectify that and quickly, but that happens some times," he said of Clinton's wastefulness.
"We will ramp up training in the coming weeks because we need to be better than that though because we have a massive month ahead of us that will shape our season."
Clinton's next match is against cross-town rivals Central on July 7 at Clinton Oval with Frenchville, Nerimbera and Frenchville again to follow.
"If we play like we did on the weekend against either of those teams we will be punished big time," Horton said.
