Good spirit reaps rewards for Warwick student
A WARWICK student has won top honours for her community work on and off campus.
Scots PGC College senior Olivia Rickert has won one of 12 Order of Australia Secondary School Citizenship Awards.
The Year 12 student is a house captain and has volunteered in numerous school events, including the SONY Foundation Camp, and has volunteered for the Red Cross and Community Disaster Relief Van to help drought-stricken Longreach farmers.
She said she was excited to travel to Queensland Parliament House in Brisbane to accept the award on September 16.
"I was nominated at the start of term but I only found out last week,” Olivia said.
"I was really surprised and pleased - I wasn't expecting it considering so many other students were nominated and I'm really looking forward to going to Brisbane to see Parliament House again and meet the other recipients.
"I really like helping people, that's just my passion and I suppose it's satisfying in a way to know I'm able to help people less fortunate than myself.”
Olivia said she had enjoyed being involved in lots of sports and extra-curricular activities during her time at school.
She said she hoped she could be seen as a positive role model for other young people around Warwick.
"Right now I'm just trying to get through QCS and Year 12 but I'm looking at studying something along those lines like social work so I can continue to help in the community,” she said.
"I'm also hoping to participate in the SONY Foundation Camp again this year, where we're able to help people with a disability do fun things like swimming and horse riding.
"I really want to thank (David Proudlove), our head of senior school, for nominating me - I'm really grateful for this opportunity and without him it wouldn't have been possible.”
Mr Proudlove said Olivia had a great positivity and generosity of spirit.
"Olivia is an exceptional young woman who we are all extremely proud of,” he said.
"When considering the extent to which she has devoted her time, energy and diverse range of talents to others, it is remarkable she has maintained her position as one of our top academic and sporting performers throughout her years in the senior school.
"Her record within the college, her record of service is unrivalled and beyond the school we have been repeatedly impressed by her energy in supporting causes close to her heart.”
