IT IS easy to see why Gympie's Gold Nugget has won the first monthly prize in the Iveco Top Stop competition.

The log cabin diner is one of a kind and the staff greet you with open arms. It's just like coming home.

Truck driver Nick Brook has won $500 just for nominating the road house and the Gold Nugget has won $500.

They will now be entered into the final draw to win $3000 in December.

Manager Ken Lavender said the Nugget's biggest asset was the staff and quality food.

"There's an ambience in the beautiful old log cabin. Drivers feel like they're at home. All the staff are passionate about their jobs. They pride themselves on service and ability to provide for the trucking network," he said.

Mr Brook agreed. That's why he nominated them.

"The atmosphere, the people, the food. It's value for money," he said.

You won't find anything over $20 on the menu. "It's my favourite truck stop. I've been a truck driver for 25 years and nothing compares to it."

Mr Lavender said the staff were serious but still had a lot of fun, which made drivers feel comfortable. Truckies make up more than 60% of business.

Soon the Nugget will be getting a facelift, with shower and toilet facilities moved to the service station area and a new forecourt area. And there will be more room for truck parking.

The secret to the Nugget's success is "good-quality, wholesome fresh food 24 hours a day", Mr Lavender says.
