Gold medal favourites not feeling pinch

EMMA Sykes is buzzing at being back on the fields where it all began.

The youth touch and oztag sensation, now in Australia's Women's Rugby 7's team, has returned to the Sunshine Coast.

Days out from their Commonwealth Games debut, the 7's stars have a week-long preparation camp.

Fresh from their gold medal at the Rio Olympics, the Aussies have no qualms holding the favourite's tag.

"We will just go out and do our best, not putting extra pressure on ourselves, if we stick to the game-plan we will achieve what we want,” Sykes, 19, said.

"I'm feeling really confident and being back in my home town is amazing.

"Obviously New Zealand will be big contenders so we will just treat each game like it's a final.”

Caboolture product Evania Pelite said the hype was similar to Rio.

"The feeling is similar to be honest,” she said.

"The preparation has been really good. It is great for us and women's sport to be in the Games.

"We are all really looking forward to playing in front of our families.”

Arch rivals New Zealand are also training at Peregian for the week in lead up and should they accidentally run into the Kiwis, Aussie coach Tim Walsh won't be concerned.

"The whole 7's series you live in one another's pockets and you have that friendly rivalry with each other. But we will be ruthless at the Games,” Walsh said.

"Sunshine Coast Stadium is a high performance facility, it is about getting into our own bubble before the Games.

"Rio is fantastic but it is in the past, the Comm Games are our goal now.”
