Glee’s casting director heads to regions

ALEX Newman, the casting director of hit television series Glee, says acting talent in regional centres like Coffs Harbour is untapped and hopes to find US television's next big thing in the Aussie bush.

Also famed for her work on The Mentalist and Supernatural, Alex will bypass major capitals and stage acting master classes in Tamworth, Orange, Canberra, Toowoomba and Townsville before heading to Sydney.

Originally from Reno, Nevada, Alex says she knows what it is like to pack up and leave home to pursue great training and acting opportunities.

"Smaller cities always have the best actors because they are hungry for it and they work hard," Alex said.

Alex has met two young actors from Orange, Hayley McCarthy, now living and working in Los Angeles and up coming Eleni Cassimatis, who have promised her the talent in regional areas is nothing short of astounding.

Alex will be in Australia in coming weeks and will remain in the country until early June eager to work with actors, singers and dancers of all levels.

"You never know what you will find," she said.

"We didn't even hear Cory Monteith sing before he was cast, but we knew we had our Finn. I am always looking for that next special performer." The master classes are open to children, teens and adults.

The masterclasses cost $350 per person.
