RUGBY UNION: The Gladstone Goats scored the first win for the season with a 45-22 victory over Frenchville Pioneers at Marley Brown Oval Saturday night.

Goats club president Dave O'Brien said it was a much needed win for the players and the club who were struggling to find it first game victory.

"The win was very good and there was real positive buzz in the players for the game,” O'Brien said.

"Right from the start the players came straight out of the blocks and it felt like we had the game.”

After doing it tough during the season, the win will be an important morale booster for the players and club.

The win came a cost with Goats forward Ben Henderson, doing a suspected MCL during the game and he could be in doubt for the rest of the season.

Having five representative players back on the team roster gave the Goats the edge needed to topple their Rockhampton-based rivals.

The five players are Paul Tema (second row), Eamon Chapman (number eight), Craig Henderson (fullback), Dylan Johnson (prop) and Jaylyn Tanoitiaola (fly half and centre).

The Goats forwards worked from the start of the match to dominate the ruck and maul against the Frenchville opponents and set up the next passage of play.

This gave the Goats' backline room to move and dominate the attack over their opponents.

Half-back Sam Carey and Tanoitiaola at fly-half had the ball in control to give the Goats every chance to finish off goal-scoring opportunities.

Tanoitiaola was player of the match for the game and had five from six conversion rate with the ball including several from the sideline.
