Girls use poster power
BOYNE Island is breeding its own miniature versions of wildlife warriors with youngsters Lauren Davidson and Jessica Rose putting their concerns about the local marine environment on paper.
Lauren, 10, and Jessica, 9, have been applauded for their initiative in designing a series of posters appealing for the community to help marine life by protecting the Boyne River.
Designing the handmade posters last weekend, the girls posted them in numerous locations near the mouth of the river.
The posters appeal for a ban on big nets with ticks indicating residents can fish and use cast nets within the river.
Lauren's mother Sharon Davidson said she was proud of her daughter and Jessica for showing such concern.
She said the recent turtle deaths had struck a chord with her daughter.
“We live near the river mouth and have seen lots of turtle deaths this year,” Mrs Davidson said.
“You used to go down there and see the turtle heads bobbing from the water but you don't see that anymore.
Gladstone District and Wildlife Carers Association president Jodi Jones has applauded the efforts of both girls.
Mrs Jones said she thought it was lovely they were aware of important environmental issues.
“It's nice to know that,” Mrs Jones said.
