Gillow thrashes her rivals

WHITE-HOT Sunshine Coast missile Shara Gillow has reinforced her claim for a London Olympics berth this year after defending her time-trial title at the Australian road championships yesterday.

The 24-year-old Belli Park product was simply stunning, recording a time of 37min4.35sec over the 28km course at Learmonth, near Ballarat.

Her time was a whopping 1:13 better than her nearest rival, Victorian Taryn Heather, with Victorian Bridie O'Donnell a further second behind in third place.

While Gillow is loath to admit it, she surely must be in the box seat to get the sole women's time-trial spot when the Olympic cycling team is announced later this year.

Riding for the new star-studded GreenEDGE-AIS outfit, Gillow believed her time yesterday was about a minute quicker than her winning time on the same course last year.

"I'm pretty happy with the result," she said. "I was wanting to do well and I pulled it off ... (but) if I'm aiming big for the Games this year, I've got to keep on getting better and better."

When asked if she was now the frontrunner to ride the time trial at the Olympics, Gillow would only say that she wanted to keep improving.

"I never like to be assuming like that. I always like to be unassuming," she said.

GreenEDGE-AIS will become the first Australian-backed team to contest all the major European races this year.

Mick Cupitt, of Maroochydore, finished 23rd in the men's time trial yesterday.
