Driver dies after truck smashes into store
POLICE have confirmed a truck driver has died after his vehicle smashed into the facade of a Brisbane camping store, almost completely destroying the front of the building.
The male driver, in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene, a police spokesman said.
It appears the truck cut a path across some park land next to Bowen Bridge Road before crossing Northey Street and hitting the store.
Live wires are down across the park which sits under an overpass.
Tammy Balfour was working across the road at Plus Fitness when she felt the gym "rattle".
"If you can imagine a rumbling sound and then bricks crashing that's what it sounded like," she said.
"The left side of the cabin was just crushed."
The accident happened just before 10am on Bowen Bridge Road in Windsor.
Tentworld manager Jason Annetts said he'd "never heard anything like it".
"It was just a big explosion with dust and bricks going everywhere," he said.
"It was like two big trucks crashing into each other."
Two Tentworld staff have been taken to hospital as a precautionary measure, he said.
Mr Annetts rushed to the truck driver's aid with other bystanders but said the man was unresponsive.
He said there was no sound of swerving or braking prior to the crash indicating the driver may have had suffered a medical episode.
Police say there were five customers in the store at the time of the incident.
Rescue crews are working to stabilise the building and retrieve the driver's body. The forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
