THEY'RE one of the smallest touch football affiliates in Queensland but that didn't stop Gayndah's teams from putting in a mighty performance at the recent Wide Bay touch football carnival in Kingaroy.

Gayndah Touch Football Association sent three junior teams to the competition: U12 boys, and U14 boys and girls.

Junior co-coordinator Jane Johnson said the carnival was a "great experience” for the teams as it gave them the chance to battle the likes of Hervey Bay, Gympie, Kingaroy and Childers.

"Though we didn't make any finals, our juniors should be proud of their efforts as they hadn't had the chance to train together as a team or play regular touch like the other towns,” Johnson said.

All teams tasted success against opponents Hervey Bay, with both U14 teams securing victory and the U12 boys battling out to a draw.

Meanwhile, the U14 girls saved their best performance for the competition's top team Gympie.

Although they went down 3-4, their lionhearted performance earned the praise of Gympie's coach.

"This was not expected,” Johnson said.

"We are one of the smallest affiliates in Queensland so to take three junior teams to these carnivals is an outstanding achievement and the kids and parents should be truly proud of their dedication and commitment.”

Johnson said the carnival was a "good lead-up” to next month's Junior State Cup in Hervey Bay, which she described as a "huge carnival” featuring hundreds of teams from all over Queensland.

"Each team has to provide an accredited coach, referee and manager and we truly appreciate those who help our Gayndah kids each year so that we can attend,” she said.

Johnson said the new season of junior touch football would start after the July school holidays and would be held on Wednesdays from 4-5pm.

She encouraged local kids aged 5-12 to sign on.

Registration costs $35 per child.
